Who We Are
The purpose of the AIDS Services Coalition is to promote and provide comprehensive information, resources and services for comfort and help to people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. We do not promote or exclude any political, lifestyle, gender-based or religious position.
We welcome participation by anyone or group with a sincere desire to promote services for the benefit of those affected by HIV/AIDS. It is not our intention to supplant or compete with any member group or non-member group and the activities thereof.
What We Do
The AIDS Services Coalition is a private non-profit organization operated by a Board of Directors. The members of this board, working in conjuction with volunteers and paid staff, provide support for our transitional housing facility for homeless persons living with HIV/AIDS - 1-2-1 Haven House, World AIDS Day, an annual AIDS Walk, and other HIV/AIDS awareness and outreachy programs in our community.
World AIDS Day
World AIDS Day is recognized in December of each year with memorials and services being held throughout the world. ASC - in collaboration with other agencies - coordinates the annual event with speakers, memorials and a candle light vigil. Participation is sought from community leaders, service organizations and elected officials from our service area.
AIDS Walk/Health Fair
ASC coordinates the Annual AIDS Walk with other resources from the community, the USM, service organizations and volunteers. This fund raiser is used to promote HIV/AIDS awareness. A Health Fair is organized at the staging and finish area of the Walk, providing an opportunity for those working with persons living with or affected by the virus and opportunity to network and provide information about their services. Many groups come together to increase awareness and become better informed about HIV - truth and myths.
AIDS Awareness
As an organization dedicated to comprehensive services and education, we are compelled to provide the community with factual and current information regarding HIV/AIDS. Unfortunately, people living with HIV/AIDS often experience discrimination, stereotyping, and prejudice due to misinformation and a general lack of knowledge. In the earlier stages of this pandemic, HIV/AIDS was thought to only affect gay men. Now, heterosexuals are infected at alarming rates. Although there is no know cure for HIV/AIDS, emphasis on edication, prevention and awareness will lessen the spread. HIV is one of the most preventable illnesses in the world. Our hope is to help erase the stigma associated with this disease and to help those living with HIV/AIDS live more fully. |
